A winter motorcycle campout in a woodland, Suffolk England. I stayed at Holistic woods campsite in Woodbridge. it’s a near wild camp site. Just a toilet and a water tap. Mark the owner is a great and interesting bloke, he has a wonderful tractor from the 1930s.
Facing the December cold and breaking the spell of a Christmas hibernation. I go to build a fire in the woods. I set up my tent, make a splendid bed for my tired bones. I Cook a curry on my trusty trangia, and I sit with my guitar in natures surroundings.
On my Harley Davidson ‘Road King Special’ I set out to rough it in style, just because you’re camping… it can still be luxurious. I double up on the sleeping bags and bring the Pendleton blanket for a cherry on top. I drag along an old charity shop guitar to entertain myself.
I got to thinking about an old friend long gone. Franco was on the streets outside the sunrooms when I met him, but he was once he was a trapeze artist, far away in his home country.
We would sup the free beers, from the bar I was the troubadour for.
‘I am your friend’ he would say…
‘and I yours Franco, and I yours.’
Rest in peace you wild eye’d high flyer.
