Walk A Mile (or 10) in the Sitka Rover GTX Boots – OHUB Review

I’ve been hiking, fishing, and hunting in the Sitka Rover GTX boots for the last few months in the Oklahoma heat and throughout the fall. I’ve walked through hay fields, waded along pond banks, scrambled over rocky terrain, and worn them out on the town. In this Sitka Rover GTX boots review, you’ll learn my honest opinions about these ankle-high boots.

First Impressions: Sitka Rover GTX Boots Review

bank anglers

The Rover GTX boots look great out of the box (I’d almost call them a boat shoe because of the slip-on design), and I found the sizing to be precisely what I expected. If these shoes needed a break-in period, I didn’t notice it because I walked several miles in them without developing any blisters or crazy foot aches. I’ve never owned any Sitka gear before, but I know Sitka has a loyal following, so I had high expectations for these boots (especially after seeing the GORE-TEX label).

Comfort & Fit

Boot

I was very pleased after walking for hours and hours in these slip-ons. My feet didn’t hurt, and the boots felt great. However, I saw others complaining about the narrow opening and how it rubbed blisters on their ankles (I have small ankles, so I didn’t have that problem). The Rover GTX boots don’t have a lot of arch support, but my toes aren’t cramped, and they feel stable, no matter the terrain.

Traction

Camping

The Rover GTX slip-on boots offer excellent traction on loose gravel, wet grass, and mud. I have yet to slip while wearing them (currently knocking on wood). The lugs offer enough grip in mud and gravel to keep you from slipping, without getting rocks stuck or feeling knobby on flat terrain.

Durability & Materials

Footwear

After walking many miles and months of use, the only signs of wear are the mud stains. However, I’m just starting to notice that the part where my toes bend, the glue that holds the trim to the material, might be separating. Sitka tried to reinforce this area, but only time will tell whether it holds up for years of use rather than just months.

Waterproofing / Breathability

Oklahoma

As long as I don’t go over the top of the boot, my feet have stayed dry while wading and fishing in shallow water. I’m naturally warm, and my feet sweat a lot, but while dove hunting on warm September days, I was very comfortable in these boots. My feet didn’t sweat any more than usual and dried relatively quickly once I removed them. I’m looking forward to using them in the snow (if we get any) this year.

Weight & Agility

Sitka, Alaska

Instructions: Analyze weight and movement.

  • Do they feel light or heavy on the feet?
  • Can you move quickly and confidently?
  • Are they suited for fastpacking or technical trails?

I’m used to wearing boots, so these don’t feel heavy, even after walking in them all day. These boots do a great job of what they are designed for: hiking while hunting and keeping your feet dry in the dew and along the edge of a body of water. You won’t be trail running in them because they have a wider, slightly heavier sole and less-than-ideal ankle support.

Aesthetics & Style

bank anglers

I’ve worn these boots to get groceries, church, and while trick-or-treating with my family, but I tend to wear outdoor gear everywhere I go. The Sitka Rover GTX boots come in four colors (Earth, Obsidian, Woodsmoke, and Sitka Black). I received the Earth color and love the flat greens and tans used by Sitka. I think the rest of the colors are very similar (they all look black or dark grey), but would go with most of my outfits.

Value for Money

Boot

Sitka is known for being pricey; however, these boots aren’t outrageously priced, but they are more expensive than some competitors. So far, I would pay the $150 for these boots because they’ve held up well, kept my feet dry, and been comfortable.

Final Thoughts: Sitka Rover GTX Boots Review

Camping

These boots are best suited for hunters and bank anglers because they’re waterproof and comfortable like sneakers. They are a tad pricey but not extremely overpriced. They’re a solid all-around slip-on boot. Great for day hikes, working around the house, hitting the town, and everything in between. However, I wouldn’t recommend them for long hikes and very technical hiking/climbing. I’ve enjoyed my time wearing them and will continue wearing them throughout the Oklahoma winter while duck and deer hunting. You can also check out the Sitka Rover GTX LTH boots if you prefer a quality leather shoe.
