The Hilleberg Soulo just doing what it does best in some unexpectedly rough weather. Out of curiosity, how many of you wear earplugs while camping? Personally, I love listening to rain on the tent when it’s just a light shower. But in conditions like this, with heavy wind driven rain, a pair of earplugs can make a huge difference when it comes to getting some sleep. On this trip, back at the beginning of winter, I actually went to sleep without them. I wanted to be able to hear any changes in the wind or weather during the night, and I’m glad I did. At one point, the wind shifted to a completely unexpected direction and the mountain behind me was no longer providing the protection it had earlier that evening. Once you’ve spent enough time with a tent, you get familiar with how it sounds and moves in different conditions. You can often tell from the way the fabric flaps or how the tent reacts to the wind when something isn’t quite right. In this case, one of the guy lines had come loose so I had to head outside, place an extra rock on a peg to secure it, and readjust the angle of a few guy lines so the tent could better handle the changing wind direction. Once everything was tightened down and I was confident there wouldn’t be any more surprises from the weather, I popped in my earplugs and managed to get some sleep. t’s not something I’d do with every tent, but with the Soulo and many of my other Hillebergs, I have complete confidence in it!
