Teenage Hunter Dies After Being Run Over By Corn Harvester, MI Police Say

A young deer hunter who was hunting in a corn field on Saturday, September 12 was tragically killed when he was run over by a corn harvester after apparently falling asleep shortly after arriving to the spot he planned on hunting.

According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, first responders were called to a cornfield in Chandler Township – roughly 240 miles northwest of Detroit – just before 9 a.m. A farm worker had discovered the hunter after driving over him, a news release by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office reports.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that a 13-year-old young man from Elkton had been dropped off earlier to deer hunt in that field and it is believed he may have fallen asleep once there,” Hanson stated in the release. “A little while later, a 25-year-old man from Pigeon arrived to finish harvesting the field with a large Krone corn chopper. Unaware anyone was in it, the hunter was accidentally driven over and found by the chopper operator a very short while later.”

The boy did not survive the accident and was pronounced dead on the scene. Hanson said the Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office has ordered an autopsy.

Jeffery Powell was in 8th grade, a member of his school’s football team and was an accomplished young hunter, fisherman, and archer. He passed away doing what he loved – hunting.
