Sitka Gear is all about getting out into nature for the most submersed experiences possible. Whether it is through the improved warm weather clothing technology they deploy, their cutting edge camouflage patterns, or the other state-of-the-art gear they produce. Sitka wants people creating memories and performing their best while doing so. A similar project of Sitka Gear’s is their Sitka Films series where they document such endeavors. A recent one is a two-part series depicting how and why Mark Healey stays as closely connected to his environment as possible — on land and sea. A professional big wave surfer, spearfisherman, and bow hunter at heart, Sitka Films tells his story in this two-part series below:
Mark Healey grew up on the island of O‘ahu, where there are two directions: toward the land or toward the sea.
He’s spent decades in unforgiving environments where reading the conditions brings success or failure, life or death. “In nature, if you aren’t diligent you will be punished. Either that animal suffers, or wave crashes down on you. That’s it,” he says.
Mark’s desire is to live as closely connected to his environment as possible. He hunts to be self-sufficient and to share the harvest with his family and friends.
To him, it’s the last punk rock thing left.
