Features of the Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet Women’s Boots
Uppers
The seamless construction of the Perspair® fabric allows the Mescalito TRK’s uppers to have functionally different areas and exceptional durability. Integrating PU Tek yarn specifically enhances abrasion-resistance, allowing them to stand up to rugged use. The uppers are also a sustainable feature. They are made from 45% recycled fibres and lined with GORE-TEX® Flux 3L membrane, containing 98% recycled fabrics.
Outsole and midsole
Grip is a crucial factor for tackling demanding terrain. The DYNAMIS TRK ECO sole with PU midsole excels in this department, offering excellent traction. The Vibram® Ecostep Evo tread is also made with up to 30% recycled rubber. The midsole is firm yet responsive, designed to provide stability when carrying heavy loads.
Lacing
Metal hooks at the top of the speed lacing system let you lock things in securely without any faff. It’s easy to make quick adjustments mid-hike, which is helpful if you like to loosen or tighten your boots as you go. One downside is that I find the laces themselves on the stretchy side. This sometimes makes it hard to get as tight a fit as I’d like.
Toe box
Offering ample room for your toes to move naturally, the toebox is more generous than other Scarpa boots I’ve tried. The added space makes a significant difference on longer hikes, where swelling can occur. The toe box strikes the right balance, roomy enough for comfort while keeping the foot secure.
Insole
The removable foam insoles are designed to be breathable, lightly supportive and antibacterial. The heel section features targeted ABS cushioning.
Cushioning and ankle collar
Ergonomically designed, the Autofit collar provides support without feeling constrictive. It’s firm enough to stabilise the ankle on uneven ground but allows for natural movement. The cushioning around the ankle is well-placed to prevent rubbing. These boots have not rubbed me once, not even on my first wear.
Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet Women’s Boots review
I was in desperate need of new hiking boots when I received the Mescalito TRKs. As such, I use them for pretty much everything past a casual walk. I am out hiking a lot, so I do put boots through their paces. Durability is very important to me, I don’t want to replace them often. I don’t tend to like boots that are very cushioned, but they do need to be comfortable. These boots have been the only footwear I’ve taken on multiple short trips, so have had many back-to-back days of use.
First impressions
My first impression of these boots was that they were excellent quality, but they were going to rub. Out of the box, they felt very stiff. I thought they would require considerable breaking in, but the first hike I did in them (which was over 10 miles) caused not a single pinch or blister. After that, I was convinced they were boots that would perform and last well.
Materials and eco-credentials
Sustainability is a core feature of the Mescalito TRK Planets. Scarpa have carefully chosen materials that not only offer top-notch performance but also align with eco-conscious values. The GORE-TEX® Flux 3L membrane, made from 98% recycled textiles, ensures waterproof protection without compromising the environment. The Vibram® tread, made with 30% recycled rubber, offers a greener option without sacrificing performance. The 45% recycled fibre uppers also do not compromise on functionality to incorporate a sustainable element.
I applaud Scarpa for their forward-thinking approach and welcome the move to more sustainable, performance-driven kit. I’ve also always respected Scarpa for providing an in-house resoling service for their footwear; proof that they design with longevity in mind.
Comfort
The Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet GTX boots offer a firmer feel compared to other hiking boots I’ve worn. They provide a solid, stable foundation, useful when navigating rough, uneven terrain. I’ve noticed that my feet tend to tire a bit over longer distances, but the boots have never once caused me pain, rubbing or blisters. The boots have a warmer feel, but are still breathable; my feet never sweat. I find the boots a very reliable, functional choice for moderate to challenging hikes where support is a priority. I spend a lot of time hiking Munros and the boots are perfect for that.
Durability
Given Scarpa’s reputation for exceptional outdoor gear, I had high expectations for the Mescalito TRK Planet boots in terms of durability. They hold up exceptionally well. The abrasion-resistant Perspair® fabric and the Vibram® tread show minimal signs of wear, even after extensive use. They have slight pinch point creasing in the corners of the toebox, but this has not affected the waterproof layer’s integrity. The boots have kept my feet bone dry despite countless wet and boggy hikes (welcome to spring in Scotland).
What I love the most about the Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet Women’s Boots
I mention throughout this review that the Mescalito TRK Planet’s have a firm, but comfortable feel. That means these boots really come into their element on more technical terrain where stability and function are important. They provide confidence when tackling rocky descents, slippery bogs and everything in between. I also really respect the build quality; everything about the boots feels built to last. They are extremely reliable.
What I don’t love so much about the Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet Women’s Boots
The only aspect of these boots which requires consideration is comfort, but this is very personal. I am used to and happy with a firmer boot. If you enjoy a soft feel, these might not be for you. If you’re not sure what you prefer, I recommend choosing boots in person. Take time to try on multiple pairs before committing to a purchase.
Verdict
The Scarpa Mescalito TRK Planet boots are a brilliant option for hikers who need stability and grip more than soft, plush comfort. They’re especially well-suited to rough, uneven terrain. The eco-credentials are a feature, not a gimmick. Scarpa have put thought into how to reduce impact without compromising performance. For anyone used to a firmer boot, they’re a very solid choice. The only reason I’m not giving them a full 5 is that the firm feel won’t be for everyone, and I do find my feet get tired after long distances. Not a budget boot by any means, but excellent value for money given their potential longevity, especially if resoled.
