This beautifully embellished Smith & Wesson K-38 Combat Masterpiece represents an unusual cultural crossover – an American service revolver transformed through traditional Spanish damascening into a functional work of art. Originally manufactured in 1950, this revolver left the S&W factory as a standard K-38 Combat Masterpiece – the revolver that would later be designated the Model 15. Designed specifically for law enforcement and competitive target shooting, it featured precision-adjustable sights, a 4-inch barrel, and was chambered in .38 Special. What makes this revolver extraordinary is the extensive gold damascening that covers nearly the entire surface. This distinctive decoration technique, particularly associated with Toledo, Spain, involves inlaying soft gold wire into the harder steel, creating intricate patterns that stand out against the blued background. The elaborate floral scrollwork surrounded by thick gold borders represents countless hours of painstaking handwork by a master craftsman. While S&W revolvers were exported worldwide, this particular gun likely spent time in Spain where the damascening was applied. During the Franco era, Spanish artisans would occasionally apply their traditional embellishment techniques to foreign firearms, creating these cultural hybrids. Interestingly, the revolver retains its functional combat features – the adjustable rear sight and ramp front sight remain untouched, suggesting the embellishment was done with care to preserve the gun’s shooting characteristics. The color case-hardened hammer and trigger provide additional visual contrast to the blue and gold. This ornate revolver stands as a testament to how functional American firearms could be transformed into objects d’art through traditional European craftsmanship – a working sidearm reimagined as a prestige display piece.
