POTD: Rupertus Experimental Breechloader – Civil War Carbine

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have an experimental Rupertus breech-loading percussion pistol-carbine with detachable stock, likely an attempt at securing a Civil War carbine contract. This prototype features a sliding breech mechanism and is marked “RUPERTUS PHILAD” ahead of the rear sight dovetail.

Jacob Rupertus was a German-born firearms designer and manufacturer who operated the Rupertus Patented Pistol Manufacturing Company from approximately 1859-1899 at 1924 North 4th Street in Philadelphia. He’s best known for pepperboxes, revolvers, and rotating barrel single-shot shotguns. This experimental carbine represents his attempt to break into the military contract market during the Civil War.

The sliding breech mechanism allowed for faster loading than muzzleloading carbines while maintaining simplicity compared to more complex breechloading systems. The detachable stock gave versatility – it could be used as a pistol for close quarters or attached as a carbine for longer range work. The U-notch incorporated into the sliding latch for the shoulder stock shows integrated design thinking.

The musket-sized nipple suggests this was built for standard military percussion caps rather than specialized components. This would have been important for any military adoption – using common ammunition and components that soldiers already carried. The stock features a dished cheek rest for proper shooting position. Richard Littlefield’s notes state “This was probably an attempt at a Civil War carbine contract and is very strongly built.” The robust construction suggests Rupertus was serious about military trials. However, no records indicate this design was ever submitted for testing or that contracts were pursued.

The marking “33” on several components suggests this may have been part of a small batch of prototypes or test guns. Whether Rupertus built multiple examples or this was the only one remains unknown. No other examples have surfaced in documented collections or auction records. Rupertus never secured military contracts during the Civil War, and this experimental carbine disappeared into obscurity. The company continued producing civilian firearms through 1899 but never achieved the success of larger manufacturers.
