OHUB Fishing Destination: Cabo San Lucas
One of my family’s favorite vacationing destinations is Cabo San Lucas off the Baha Peninsula. While it’s a vacationing destination, it’s also one of my top choices for offshore fishing.
I keep in touch with my friend Arturo Chacon with Tag Cabo Sportfishing about the seasonal changes that occur on the Pacific side of the peninsula, as well as the Bay of Cabo San Lucas.
Chacon told me that they see an influx in clients as winter draws near because of the unfishable weather for much of the northern section of the US. He also filled me in on what’s biting and what to look for if you make a trip to Cabo in November.
Striped Marlin
“November has been an absolute blast here in Cabo San Lucas,” Chacon said. “The Striped Marlin bite is on fire, with multiple hookups reported daily.” In my opinion, Marlin are my favorite fish to target when visiting Cabo because of their acrobatic nature and the fight that they provide. “The Striped Marlin are the stars of the show this month! They’re hitting live bait, lures, and teasers hard,” Chacon said.
Yellowfin Tuna
Chacon said the Yellowfin Tuna are also plentiful, with good-sized catches coming in from both inshore and offshore trips. “We’re seeing strong numbers of Yellowfin being found near floating debris and schools of baitfish. Trolling and chunking are both proving effective,” he said.
Dorado (mahi-mahi)
The Mahi Mahi are adding to the excitement in November. Their vibrant colors flashing through the water as they hit the lines are always a crowd-pleaser. “We’re seeing most of our Dorado being caught while trolling for Marlin and Tuna,” Chacon said.
Wahoo
Another exciting fish to catch is Wahoo. These fish are known for their lighting-fast runs but more importantly, for the delicious table fare. “In November, the ‘speedsters of the sea’ are hitting trolling lures that we pull hard and fast,” Chacon said.
Tips for November Fishing
Early mornings and late afternoons will be your best bet when fishing around Cabo. As always Chacon recommends live using live bait. “Live bait such as Caballito and Mackerel are excellent choices for marlin and Tuna,” he said. If artificials are your thing, Chacon recommends trying a variety of lures. “Experiment with different lures to see what the fish are responding to,” he said.
Chacon said the weather for fishing has been fantastic this month, with warm sunny days and calm seas. But reminds folks not to forget their sunglasses and hats when fishing in Cabo in November!
