You’ve gotta love camping dinner recipes that do all the “work” while you are out exploring nature for the day!
The secret to this succulent Grilled Flat Iron Camping Steak Recipe is the easy marinade that flavors the meat while you are out having fun in the great outdoors!
Psst we’re compensated…see our disclosures.
How To Make Steak Camping
You can bake, broil, steam or grill your steaks at the campsite … today we are grilling an inexpensive flat iron steak to perfection!
Step 1. Mix the marinade
The thing that makes this one of our crazy-simple easy camping meals is that you have absolutely no chopping of fresh ingredients … all of the flavor comes from a beautiful blend of spices!
You just need to whisk together some brown sugar, vinegar, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and salt.
Step 2. Bag the flat iron steak and the marinade
You’ll be marinating the flat iron steak in a re-sealable plastic bag.
Drop the flat iron steak into the bag, then pour in the marinade … seal it up and toss to coat.
Place it in a refrigerator or cooler while you explore the
great outdoors for a minimum of 6 hours.
Get tips on how to pack a cooler efficiently and safely to prevent cross-contamination.
Step 3. Prepare for cooking
You can make this camp steak as one of our camping grill recipes or as one of our campfire recipes.
Whichever cooking method you choose, you’ll be cooking over
a medium-high heat and you’ll want a nice sear so you will need to pre-heat your
device to get it up to temperature.
After the grill grate is hot … but before you place the meat
on it … you’ll want to add a thin layer of oil to it with a bit of cooking
spray or an oil-covered wadded-up paper towel.
Step 4. Grill the steak
Now it is time to take the flat iron steak out of the
marinade … shake off any excess and place it on the preheated grill or campfire
grill grate for cooking.
It will only take approximately 4 minutes per side for
medium-rare … you will be grilling the meat uncovered until it reaches your
personal preference of doneness.
Camp Cooking Tip:
If it sticks … it is NOT time to flip! You only want to turn the steak one time
during the short cooking process. Wait for the meat to “release” from the grill
grate … then you can turn it to grill the other side.
Step 5. Let rest … then slice and serve
When the meat is cooked to your liking, you’ll remove it to
a cutting mat then cover it to keep it warm as it rests for about 5 minutes
before you slice it.

Camp Cooking Tip: Let grilled meat stand about 5 minutes before slicing to achieve maximum juiciness.
