Welcome back, folks! Now it is time to tackle something that trips up a lot of collectors and enthusiasts alike: figuring out just when your carbine was actually made, and whether those parts belong together.

Dating: M1 Carbine
The Serial Number System
Dating an M1 Carbine is simultaneously straightforward and maddeningly complicated (believe me, I tried to make this super easy). The straightforward part is this: the U.S. Army Ordnance Department assigned blocks of serial numbers to each prime contractor. So in theory, you look at the manufacturer’s name stamped on the receiver, check the serial number, cross-reference it against the known production blocks, and you have your approximate date of manufacture. In practice, it gets messier.

The system worked like this: Inland, as the first and largest producer, started at serial number 1 and worked their way up. Winchester received the block starting at 1,000,000. Other manufacturers received their own assigned ranges as they came online. When a manufacturer finished one block, Ordnance would assign them another, which is why you see companies like Inland and Rock-Ola with multiple non-contiguous serial number ranges.
For those wanting a general framework, here is roughly how the major manufacturers’ serial blocks shake out:
- Inland Division (General Motors) dominated production and received multiple blocks throughout the war. Their earliest carbines start in the low thousands from mid-1942, running through various assigned ranges up into the 6 million range by late 1944.
- Winchester’s primary block ran from 1,000,000 through approximately 1,350,000, with a second block in the 5.5 million range.
- IBM operated in the 3.6 to 4 million range from late 1943 through mid-1944.
- Underwood, National Postal Meter, Quality Hardware, Saginaw, Standard Products, and Rock-Ola each had their own assigned blocks as well.
The general rule of thumb that serial numbers under 1 million belong to either Inland or Winchester holds pretty well for basic identification. Beyond that, things require more detailed reference materials. Ones that I myself did not have the time or money to track down to fully flush it out for you. There are resources online that I looked at that are comfy enough to get ideas but I will always recommend books over random generators and tables on the web.
Why Dating Gets Complicated
Here is where I have to be honest with you: if you are looking for a simple chart that tells you “serial number X means your carbine was made on this date,” you are going to be disappointed. Several factors conspire against easy dating.
First, there is the issue of line-out receivers. Material shortages and production demands meant that receivers sometimes changed hands between manufacturers. When this happened, Ordnance required the original manufacturer’s name be struck through with a horizontal line, and the receiving manufacturer’s identification mark added near the serial number. So you might find a receiver with Inland’s serial number range, but finished and assembled by Underwood or Rock-Ola. These line-outs are not fakes or problems; they are simply a reality of wartime production coordination.

Second, manufacturers occasionally overran their assigned serial number blocks and started stamping numbers that belonged to another contractor. This created duplicate serial numbers across different manufacturers. When Ordnance caught these, they directed an “X” be added after the serial number on the offending receivers. Inland notably ran into Winchester’s second block around the 5.5 million range, creating a population of legitimate duplicates.

Third, and perhaps most significantly for the average carbine you encounter today: arsenal rebuilds. The M1 Carbine saw extensive service through World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Throughout this period, carbines were inspected, repaired, and rebuilt at various arsenals and depots. During these rebuilds, there was no attempt to keep manufacturer-matched parts together. Whatever serviceable part came out of the bin went onto the carbine being worked on. A 1943-dated Inland receiver might end up with a 1945 Winchester barrel, a Rock-Ola trigger housing, and a Standard Products stock. This is not a “parts gun” in the negative sense; it is simply how military small arms were maintained.

The result is that most M1 Carbines you encounter today are what collectors call “mixmasters” with parts from multiple manufacturers and production periods. Finding a truly all-correct, as-manufactured carbine is increasingly rare and commands a significant premium.
Barrel Dates: A Useful Tool
Since receivers got separated from their original parts so frequently, barrel dates often provide more useful information than serial numbers alone. M1 Carbine barrels were typically marked with the manufacturer’s name or code and a date stamp indicating month and year of manufacture (for example, “INLAND MFG DIV” with “7-43” indicating July 1943).

However, even barrel dates have limitations. Early production sometimes saw barrels dated a few months before the receivers they were installed in, as barrel production got ahead of receiver manufacturing. And of course, barrels were replaced during rebuilds and repairs, so a barrel date only tells you when that specific barrel was made, not necessarily when the complete carbine was assembled.
A Definitive Reference
For serious collectors and anyone wanting to evaluate whether a carbine’s parts are “correct” for its serial number range, I have been led to assume there is really only one essential reference: Craig Riesch’s U.S. M1 Carbines, Wartime Production, which luckily as of writing seems to be an affordable book. His work includes charts showing manufacturer codes, subcontractor marks, and the production periods for virtually every component.
I am not going to try to reproduce his research here, both because it would take several articles to do so and because the man deserves credit (and sales) for his decades of work. If you are serious about M1 Carbines, buy the book.
Reproductions and Commercial Copies: M1 Carbine
Now, if you have a carbine and the serial number does not seem to match any of the WWII production ranges, or the receiver markings look unfamiliar, you might have a commercial reproduction rather than a military-issue example.
After World War II, the popularity of the M1 Carbine with both veterans and civilians created a market for commercial copies. Surplus military parts were abundant, and several companies stepped in to build carbines for the civilian market.
Universal Firearms of Hialeah, Florida was probably the most prolific. Early Universal carbines, produced through the 1960s, were assembled from genuine surplus USGI parts on new receivers and are generally well-regarded. However, beginning in 1968, Universal introduced their “New Carbine” which, despite looking like an M1 Carbine externally, was a completely different design internally with almost no parts interchangeability with genuine GI carbines. Quality on these later Universals is inconsistent at best.

Plainfield Machine Company of New Jersey produced carbines from the early 1960s through 1978, using a mix of surplus and newly manufactured parts. Plainfield’s quality was generally decent, and their carbines are closer to GI specification than the later Universals.

Iver Johnson acquired Plainfield’s carbine operations in the late 1970s and continued production, later also acquiring Universal. Early Iver Johnson carbines made at the former Plainfield facility in New Jersey are reasonably well-made. Later production after the company moved to Arkansas has a more mixed reputation. Iver Johnson also produced the “Enforcer” pistol variant, following Universal’s lead with their own pistol version.

More recently, Auto-Ordnance (part of the Kahr Arms family) and a revived Inland Manufacturing have produced new-manufacture M1 Carbines for the commercial market. These modern reproductions are built to USGI specifications and offer a way to enjoy the carbine platform without hunting down increasingly scarce and expensive original military examples.

My own example featured in this series is actually an Auto-Ordnance reproduction, which I will discuss more in our range session next time. While it lacks the historical provenance of a genuine WWII or Korean War veteran, it lets me put rounds downrange without worrying about diminishing the value of an irreplaceable piece of American history.
End of Part III: M1 Carbine
Well folks, I knew going into this one that dating the M1 Carbine was going to be a beast of a topic, and it did not disappoint. Between line-outs, overruns, arsenal rebuilds, and the maze of commercial reproductions, there was simply too much ground to cover without giving your eyes (and my word count) a proper workout.
So in the interest of not turning this into a novel and saving everyone some eye strain, I am going to call it here for Part III. We will pick up next time with the specifications, aftermarket parts and accessories, and of course the moment I have been looking forward to: actual range time with the little carbine. There is still plenty more to discuss, and I want to give each of those sections the attention they deserve rather than rushing through them at the tail end of an already lengthy article.
