2. Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area
Though it’s 54 miles or just under an hour from Saint Louis, Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area is worth the drive. Lots of mature trees and open spaces make this a breezy beautiful campground, and the lake creates a stunning backdrop for a fun weekend or a more extended stay.

This campground has it all; a heated pool, a dog park, and a gem-mining station are just some of the amenities for kids and furry friends. Big groups can meet at the pavilion for gatherings, and there is a wide range of lodging, from deluxe cabins to extended-stay accommodations to dispersed camping. St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA is close to Six Flags Adventure Park and only 30 minutes from the Gateway Arch in downtown Saint Louis.

4. Washington State Park
Most sites at Washington State Park are partially shaded, and there’s a generous amount of space between sites to give campers lots of privacy. The dump station is tricky to get to if you have an RV or a trailer, but the staff is amiable and helpful.
A camp store sells firewood and ice, and there are pit toilets, flush toilets, and a shower and toilet station with laundry. Don’t miss the fundraiser Sunday breakfast for homemade biscuits and gravy.
