Summary: Open and Closed Campgrounds due to COVID-19

National Parks and Forests

Park officials at all major NPS sites are taking precautions to avoid the spread of COVID-19 at parks, and a majority of parks have closed or limited visitor operations, including welcome centers, ticketing offices and more. A number of parks, listed below, are entirely closed to visitation for the time being. These parks do not permit visitation for day-use or overnight stays.

A majority of national forests, managed by the US Forest Service, are operating on a case-by-case basis for day-use and overnight stays remaining open. Check your individual state below for more information on national forests open or closed due to COVID-19

State Parks, Forests and Public Campgrounds

As of 3/31, more than 30 states have closed campgrounds or delaying their openings to correspond with new guidelines on social gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For individual parks and campgrounds closed in each state, read our state-by-state guide below.

RV Parks and Private Campgrounds

Private RV parks and campgrounds in the U.S. are deemed “essential” by local governments on a case-by-case basis. It is recommended to call and check for openings for any private RV parks and campgrounds in the U.S.  Download The Dyrt app to find contact info and directions to camping nearby.

So far, announcements have been made in Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland that declare all RV campgrounds in those states as non-essential, and closed until further notice. New York, California, Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Washington and Tennessee have deemed RV campgrounds as essential services, and are open depending on the ownership. In Pennsylvania, Oregon, Texas and Florida, local cities and counties are deciding on a case-by-case basis the status of RV parks.

Most KOAs are currently open but may have restrictions based on the specific campground.

Alabama Campground Closures

All Alabama state parks state-owned public areas will remain open for entry and camping until further notice with limitations on crowd size and some facilities. All beaches will be open to gatherings of 10 or fewer people following social distancing guidelines. All outdoor activities including hiking, camping, and fishing will be allowed as long as social distancing guidelines are respected. Call or check online for information on individual state parks.

Alabama RV parks have been designated as “essential services” and remain open on a case-by-case basis. Call ahead to confirm all reservations.

Arizona Campground Closures

All Arizona State Parks and related trails are currently open with limitations on historic sites, visitors centers and gift shops. Campgrounds, park access, trails and more will remain open. Dispersed camping in National Forests remains permitted at this time.

Arizona RV parks have been designated as “essential services” and remain open on a case-by-case basis. Call ahead to confirm all reservations.

Arkansas Campground Closures

Arkansas State Parks are fully closed to the public, including day use sites, campgrounds, and other public areas. Find more information on the Arkansas State Parks website.

California Campground Closures

California has entered a shelter-in-place that restricts all recreational , including to camping destinations within the state, until further notice. All California state parks will be limiting or closing visitor services and welcome centers, and temporarily closing campgrounds on public lands. Due to this order, all public campgrounds in California are temporarily closed.  Most dispersed camping and trails remain open.

California RV parks have been designated as “essential services” and remain open on a case-by-case basis. Call ahead to confirm all reservations.

Colorado Campground Closures

The Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife will be re-opening camping at most state parks on May 12. While camping will be open playgrounds, yurts, cabins, and picnic areas will remain closed until further notice.  Please contact individual state parks for more info.

Connecticut Campground Closures

Connecticut State Parks and Forests have announced closures for all campgrounds currently open, campgrounds will remain closed in State Parks until June 11 at least. All campground reservations that were made for stays prior to Memorial Day weekend will automatically be canceled and refunds will be processed.

Connecticut RV parks have not been designated as “essential services” and are closed in accordance with local governments, until April 20 at the earliest.

Delaware Campground Closures

Delaware State Parks have waived entrance fees until April 30, and announced a total closure of camping activities in all state park campsites, cabins, cottages, and yurts. Campground reservations have been cancelled through May 15, and full refunds will be issued for reservations scheduled during that time.
As well, all public access to Delaware beaches is restricted until May 15. All private RV parks in Delaware are open to the public, and classified as essential.

Florida Campground Closures

As of May 22, most Florida State Parks will open with limited camping and all will be open for day use. Limitations have been put in place to maintain low density and follow social distancing guidelines.  Most Florida State Forest Campgrounds will remain open with limited capacity, find the entire list of Florida State Campground closures here. Georgia Campground Closures

Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites remain open for entry and camping. With increased crowds, some parks may limit the number of people entering. Some partner-operated sites may have reduced hours or closures—it’s advised to call and check on individual reservations during this time, find contact info and campground directions on The Dyrt app. All Army Corps of Engineers Campgrounds on Lake Lanier are closed until further notice.

Idaho Campground Closures

Indiana Campground Closures

Indiana State Parks and other Department of Natural Resources properties, including state parks, forests and recreation areas, will remain open. All campgrounds on these sites will be open to advance reservations; no walk-in campers will be permitted. Indiana State Parks will waive fees for cancellations or transfers of reservations and issue refunds as requested through April 30, 2020.

Public facilities managed directly by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are currently closed.

Iowa Campground Closures

All Iowa State Parks and National Forests are open for day use and camping.  Bathrooms will remain open but some facilities including drinking fountains will be closed until further notice.

Kansas Campground Closures

All Kansas State Parks, fishing lakes and wildlife areas are open with limited access. Camping, cabins, yurts, and most restrooms remain open to the public. Find more information here.

Kentucky Campground Closures

Louisiana Campground Closures

Louisiana State Parks are open for day use and camping to residents of the state.  They will reopen to out of state residents at the end of May with limitations of groups greater than 9 people.

Maine Campground Closures

As of May 18, businesses in rural areas including all campgrounds and sporting camps will be allowed to open in Maine. In June, all campgrounds and RV parks including State PArk campgrounds will be allowed to open and will be accepting both state residents and out of state visitors who have completed quarantine guidelines. Maryland Campground Closures

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland State Parks are open with some restrictions. While camping is open in some parks, many still remain closed or are only open to day use.  Contact parks before visiting and prepare for limited facilities

Massachusetts Campground Closures

Massachusetts State Parks will cancel and refund all camping reservations through May 25, 2020. Most state parks remain open but camping and visitor centers are all closed until further notice.

Michigan Campground Closures

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has allowed day use in most state parks but has currently closed camping and overnight stays until further notice. Check here for information on specific parks.

Minnesota Campground Closures

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, in accordance with guidance from state health officials, have closed all campgrounds and backcountry camping areas in state parks, forests, wildlife management areas and natural areas until further notice.

Mississippi Campground Closures

Mississippi State Parks have announced closures to public indoor facilities and primitive campgrounds on state park land. RV campgrounds will remain open campers with self contained camping vehicles.

Missouri Campground Closures

Missouri State Parks will begin to reopen on Monday May 18, most campgrounds will remain closed. Currently, day-use activities and trails remain open to the public.

Montana Campground Closures

As of April 18, in keeping with guidelines for COVID-19, Montana State Parks are temporarily closed. Parks will remain open only for day-use activities.

Nebraska Campground Closures

The Nebraska Game and Wildlife Commission has announced that parks will be open for limited camping that meets social distancing and group size standards.  State Parks will be open on a case by case basis for camping and day use.

Nevada Campground Closures

Nevada State Parks have closed all overnight campgrounds on state property. All scheduled programs are canceled, and museums, Visitor Centers and park offices are closed until further notice.

New Hampshire Campground Closures

New Hampshire State Parks have closed all campgrounds except for a select few which will remain open to New Hampshire residents only. Many state parks remain open for day use with a reservation.

New Jersey Campground Closures

New Jersey State Parks have announced closures of all public indoor and outdoor facilities and a limit on public events in parks, while also closing all campgrounds through April 30. All private RV campgrounds are closed by order of the governor. All reservations made during that time will be refunded.

New Mexico Campground Closures

New Mexico State Parks has restricted all overnight camping and day use activities at state parks Until further notice. Entrance to parks is no longer possible for the time being. Closures have also hit all national forest front-country campgrounds, and all BLM land in New Mexico.

New York Campground Closures

NY state officials have announced a total closure of camping on state-owned land, established or dispersed, through April 30. All reservations made in 2020 will be canceled. To encourage social distancing during this crisis, all public programs and events held in state parks and public outdoor areas are suspended indefinitely. However, all-year-round state parks, trails, and grounds of historic sites are currently open for outdoor recreation and enjoyment.

Ohio Campground Closures

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will begin to reopen state parks on May 21. All public land will remain open for the time being for day use, with cancellations of some activities and visitor center closures.

Oklahoma Campground Closures

Oklahoma’s & Recreation Department has announced closures of group campgrounds and lodges, but will keep state parks and public land areas open to tent and RV campers for the time being. Tent campgrounds are currently being severely limited to access, and RV campsites remain unchanged. The TRD has also recommended limits on large public gatherings and canceled events for the month.  Cabins will remain open but will need 24-48 between reservations and all cookware has been removed from them.

Oregon Campground Closures

Oregon State Parks and forests are closed to campers from April 3 through May 8, and will refund site fees during that time. Visitor centers, gift shops and other public operations facilities will see limited opening times or full closures. Rental fire tower cabins in the Mt. Hood National Forest will be closed until further notice. Some outdoor wilderness areas will begin to open as May 15 and some State Parks are scheduled to open on June 9.

The Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources is allowing day use of all parks, forests, and wilderness areas.  Campgrounds and facilities will be open on a case by case basis with the guidelines of social distancing.

Rhode Island Campground Closures

The Rhode Island State Parks system announced a new closure of all state parks and state beaches, including campgrounds, as of April 3 for the forseeable future. The Rhode Island Department of Health recommends not gathering in groups of more than 10.

South Dakota Campground Closures

South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks have announced no closures to public lands or campgrounds at this time, but will be closing some state park offices and monitoring the spread of COVID-19 in the state and making closures as necessary. The Black Hills National Forest has closed all campgrounds indefinietly.

Tennessee Campground Closures

Tennessee State Parks have announced all park campgrounds are closed until April 14, along with all park-led events and activities. Tennessee Valley Authority Parks plan to close 5 TVA-run campgrounds until mid-April, citing concerns over COVID-19.

A Texas State Parks health alert announced April 7 that all state-run outdoors areas and campgrounds will close entirely due to COVID-19 for the time being. All cancellations fees will be waived for reservations held during the month of April.

Utah Campground Closures

While cancelling high-density activities this month, Utah State Parks have begun closing campgrounds on a case-by-case basis. In general, however, Utah’s state parks remain open only to visitors residing in the same county where the state park is located. See below for list of current closed Utah State Park Campgrounds.

Virginia Campground Closures

Most private campgrounds in Virginia remain open for stays of 14 nights. All Virginia State Parks are open for day use and State Park campgrounds are scheduled to open on May 21.

Washington Campground Closures

Washington State Parks and subsequent campgrounds have extended their total closure of state lands for outdoor recreation closure through May 4; all visitor centers, park-run events, special activities and planned programming are canceled.  As of April 28, recreation sites, fishing, golf courses, and some national forests are open as of May 5 but will remain closed to campers.

West Virginia Campground Closures

As of May 21, West Virginia State Parks will begin to re-open and camping will be allowed for in-state residents with advance reservations. Wyoming Campground Closures

National Parks: Are National Parks Open?

Many National Parks, including the ones listed below, have announced closures:

Arches National Park, UT—CLOSED

Arches Visitor Center and associated park facilities are closed until further notice. The Devils Garden Campground will not be accepting new reservations for the time being. Backcountry camping at Arches is closed, as new permits are not being issues for the time being.

Assateague Island National Seashore, MD—CLOSED

The Assateague Island National Seashore visitor centers/ranger stations and the Oceanside, Bayside, Group and Horse campgrounds will temporarily close. Public parking areas and trails will remain open for the time being.

Bandelier National Monument, NM—CLOSED

In accordance with national, state and local health officials, the majority of Bandelier National Monument is closed to the public. The Tsankawi, Juniper and Ponderosa Campgrounds are closed until further notice, as well as any dispersed backcountry camping spots. Trails and park entrances are still available to visitor use.

Great Basin National Park, NV—CLOSED

Following guidance from the CDC and recommendations from state and local public health officials, all campgrounds and visitors centers in Great Basin National Park are closed until further notice. All cave tours are temporarily closed as well.

Canyonlands National Park, UT—CLOSED

According to park officials, all visitor facilities and ranger-led activities are closed and cancelled through April. Campgrounds at The Needles and Island in the Sky are closed through April, and all backcountry camping is closed to visitors until further notice.

Big Bend National Park, TX—CLOSED

Park officials announced all campgrounds and dispersed camping areas are closed until further notice, including the Chisos Mountain Lodge. Visitor centers are closed. Park gates, trails, and roads are currently open for visitor use with no fees.

Bryce Canyon National Park, UT—OPEN

As of May 13, Bryce Canyon National Park is open.  While the park will remain open 24/7, overnight accommodations and camping and backcountry camping will remain closed.

Congaree National Park, SC—CLOSED

All welcome centers, ticketing offices, visitor centers and restrooms are closed to visitors. Longleaf and Bluff Campgrounds will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ—MIXED

Grand Canyon National Park is closed to day-use, overnight, backcountry, and river rafters.  This includes Mather Campground and all backcountry camping.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN/NC—CLOSED

Beginning May 23, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will begin phase 1 of re-opening.  Some restrooms, entrances, picnic areas, and trails will be open at this time.  Visitor centers and campgrounds will remain closed until further notice. Backcountry trails, thru-hiking areas, and dispersed camping on these trails will be open.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, HI—CLOSED

All activites, public areas (including restrooms, park facilities, trails, entrances and more), and all campgrounds are closed in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The park will offer no services except those that support visitor or resource protection.

Joshua Tree National Park, CA—CLOSED

Joshua Tree National Park has opened with some restrictions including the closure of group campsites and visitors centers.  All camping reservations made on rec.gov will be canceled until September and all of the open campsites are currently first-come, first-serve.

Olympic National Park, WA—MIXED

Olympic National Park has closed all park facilities indefinitely, including most park entrances, visitor centers, restrooms and more. All backcountry campgrounds are closed to hike-in visitors, and the park has delayed opening Sol Duc Campground and Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort until April 24.

Pinnacles National Park, CA—MIXED

The park will remain closed for day use and recreational hiking and climbing but campgrounds will remain open for those who have reservations. The caves are currently closed but hiking trails are open.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks and all related camping will remain closed until May 31st.

Shenandoah National Park, VA—DELAY

The park has closed a number of visitor centers, access roads, and other park facilities. This has also lead to delayed opening dates for Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows Campground until April 9/10.

Rocky Mountain National Park, CO—CLOSED

According to park officials, Rocky Mountain National Park is closed to all visitors for the time being. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and there will be no access permitted to Rocky Mountain National Park, including through backcountry hiking. All campgrounds will be closed for the time being.

White Sands National Park, NM—CLOSED

All campgrounds, visitor facilities and general entry to the park will be restricted and closed indefinitely, following guidance from the CDC and recommendations from state and local public health in consultation with NPS Public Health Service officers.

Yellowstone National Park, WY— RE-OPENING MAY 18

Yellowstone National Park has announced that its first state of re-opening will begin on May 18th.  Only two out of their five entrances to the park will be open and traffic with be limited to the lower loop, so expect delays if you plan to visit during this time.  Overnight stays of any kind including camping will not be available during this time.

Yosemite National Park, CA—CLOSED

In a press release on March 18, Yosemite National Park announced that “campgrounds currently open… are now closed.” As of this writing, the only Yosemite campgrounds that had already opened for the season so far are Upper Pines and Camp 4.

Everglades National Park, FL—CLOSED

According to the latest park announcements, all park access is closed to any visitors indefinitely, including all drive-in, hike-in and boat-in campgrounds. Ranger-led programs, concession tours and other visitor activities will remain cancelled. Updates on further closures will be available on the park website.

Death Valley National Park, CA—CLOSED

Death Valley National Park Officials announced all front-country campgrounds, including Furnace Creek, Mesquite Spring, Texas Springs, Emigrant, Stovepipe Wells and Sunset campgrounds, are closed. As well, Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells Visitor Centers are closed. Hike-in dispersed camping is open. Updates will be posted to the park website when available.

Indiana Dunes National Park, IN—CLOSED

Indiana Dunes National Park has announced a temporary closure of buildings and restrooms
as a public health precaution, until further notice. This includes all visitor services and a delay in opening of Dunewood campground. Check back for updates via social media and park website.

Zion National Park, Utah—OPEN

Zion National Park has begun to re-open limited operations as of May 13. Shuttles will not be running, parking is ver limited, Kolob Canyons arean and campgrounds will remain closed.
