Best Foods To Take On Your Next Outdoor Adventure
I don’t know about you but I get excited about food when I’m planning an adventure! I really enjoy the freeze dried meals, they’re quick and easy and delicious. Bonus points if I’m able to take a cooler because bacon and eggs will be had.
Regardless of the type of adventure, there are a lot of food options to choose from these days. Many companies are even coming out with gluten free, vegan and even added vitamins.
In this article I’m going to focus mainly on non-perishable meals and ideas. Unless I’m car camping or overlanding, I rarely have the opportunity to take fresh foods. What’s great about these options is they all have long shelf lives so you can buy now and save for the next time you have a trip planned.
Here are the best foods to take on your next adventure:
Nutrient Survival
I’m pleasantly surprised with this fairly new company. They produce freeze dried meals that offer the added benefit of vitamins mixed right into it! This has been an issue with many outdoor meals; the nutrition. The added vitamins don’t affect the taste at all. The family favorite is the Mac and Cheese. It’s so creamy and delicious. Everything has vitamins added to it, even the cookies! Yes, that’s right, I said cookies. You can get a big ol’ #10 can of cookies that have the added benefit of vitamins.
This is a must try for anyone wanting some additional nutrition with their meals. Great for emergency preparedness, as well.
Backpacker’s Pantry
I’m sure you’ve started seeing more and more Backpacker’s pantry hit the shelves lately. They’ve become increasingly more popular. And for good reason. Their meals include Kathmandu Curry, Risotto with Chicken and Cuban Coconut Rice & Beans. So many unique meals and there’s definitely something for everyone. They taste great, are filling and of course, lightweight.
Mountain House
This brand is a staple in our household. They’re always coming out with new meal varieties and deals. They’ve been around a long time and have proven that their meals last 25 years. How much longer will they last? Who knows. But it’s great to have some of these on hand. I’m not gonna lie, we’ve eaten some for regular dinner when I didn’t want to cook!
Omeals
These are reminiscent towards MRE’s. They have one meal inside along with the heater to heat up the meal. You only need a little bit of liquid to use for the heater, but it doesn’t even have to be water, it could be any type of liquid. The pizza is a favorite with my family and everyone we’ve tried has been mighty tasty. I really like that it just uses a heater and only needs a little bit of liquid in order to eat it, don’t even need to heat the liquid up, the heater pack does it for you.
Augason Ready Pouches
I really enjoy Augason and they recently came out with their Ready Pouches which are great for emergency kids, on the go or outdoor adventures. Their pouches come with more than just a single entree, it comes with a whole meal! For instance, one pouch might come with enough water to rehydrate the meals, a drink mix and two meals. Some of them are made to sustain you for 24 hours, while others have enough for 1 week. They’re unique pouches with some great options. I’d highly recommend having some of these around for various purposes.
Outdoor Herbivore
Their meals cater to those who are interested in organic vegetarian meals. I’ve tried them and they are delicious. They even have some vegan options. They are unique meals that you won’t find with too many other companies. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, these will certainly offers some nice variety to your outdoor meal choices.
