Genuine car accessories are big business for manufacturers and one of the quirkiest car accompaniments out there at the moment is the Audi camping tent.
Designed to attach around the tailgate of the Q3, Q5 or Q7, the tent sleeps three and comes in a bag barely bigger than a carry-on case. It weighs just over 13kg.
It’s amazing how big it looks when it’s out of the bag. The tent floor is 9.5m2 so there should be plenty of space when it’s up.
Before starting to inflate the structure, check all the air valves are closed, then it’s a simple twist to attach the hand pump and here we go.
It’s not hard but it does require a bit of elbow grease, here’s where a second person would come in handy.
The double walled inflatable struts are filling quickly and it’s fascinating to watch it unfurl and start to pop up.
The connection to the car is waterproof and the boot light wont stay on and run the battery flat.
Though the material looks light it can also handle a bit of wet weather with a water column of 4000mm – which is more than acceptable for camping and most of the unpredictable weather than can come out of nowhere.
Everywhere we’ve taken this tent it has been the centre of attention – and its also practical and functional to use. But what else would you expect from a partnership between Audi and Heimplanet – a lot of the German tent designer’s creations feature an inflatable structure and most look almost arachnid.
It’s more than 2 metres high too so plenty of headroom and none of the hunching or crawling into the tent at the end of a long day.
This Audi original accessory will set you back more than around $2200.
