AllOutdoor Review: YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14 is Hearty & Pre-Seasoned

When you think of YETI you likely think of hard coolers that can stand a beating. So much so that they can stand up to bears in the wild, and a tumble or two down a mountainside. In recent years, YETI has gone on to expand into more than their beloved tumblers and coolers though. Everything from waterproof bags to Pour Over coffee sets and even such hardware as cast iron skillets! Not known for doing metalwork, YETI surprised many of us in the industry yet we were intrigued and excited all the same. Can YETI make a legit cast iron skillet for the great outdoors, your home kitchen, and beyond?… We will look to answer that very question in today’s AllOutdoor Review covering the YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14 (their 14″ model). Let’s dive in!

Specifications – YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14

So, what’s the nitty-gritty on these cast iron skillets? The YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14 is huge compared to cast irons you might have used in the past. It definitely felt that way to me. An extra-large skillet made for your heartiest feasts, you can cook up a bevy of food with this 14″ model.

Our 14-inch skillet is cast with precision to give you a massive work surface for your favorite meals. As our widest pan to date, it works just as well roasting a spatchcocked chicken as it does simmering shrimp étouffée. It’s a blank canvas for generations of live-fire feasting and an heirloom piece that will never stop impressing.

By purchasing one of these YETI Cast Iron Skillet models, you have FREE returns if you happen to be dissatisfied, and it is backed by a 5-Year Warranty. Some other important features and benefits you may want to keep in mind are presented by YETI below:

  • Holds the Heat: This high quality cast iron can retain and balance high temperatures, giving you an even, consistent cook.
  • Easy to Handle: Each skillet is cast so its thick only where it needs to be, which results in a lighter pan than traditional cast iron. And to conform to the natural angle of your arm, we added an ergonomic handle and two convenient pouring spots.
  • Polished and Pre-Seasoned: Each pan is uniquely smooth, pre-seasoned, and free of any engineered coatings to create a naturally non-stick barrier that becomes even stronger every time you grease the meals.
  • Time-Honored Traditions: Borrowing from vintage casting methods, we use a Ceramic-like mold rather than sand molds often used for standard cast-iron skillets, yielding a hyper-smooth finish for a naturally non-stick barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Does my pan come pre-seasoned? While your pan comes pre-seasoned, it is not yet fully non-stick and will become more non-stick with time. We recommend cooking with anything that fills the pan, uses oil or fat, and gets cooked at a consistently high heat for your first few uses. Check out our recipes for inspiration.
  • Can I clean my YETI™ Cast Iron Skillet with soap? Yes, you can use dish soap. And yes, some of your seasoning might disappear in the process. But that’s okay. The oil or fat from your next meal will help. Absolutely no dishwashers, though.
  • What should I do after washing my skillet? Immediately after washing, heat your skillet on the stove to evaporate any and all residual water. Then, right after drying, lightly coat all surfaces with a refined, neutral oil like canola. Wipe out the excess oil with a clean dish towel.
  • How do I re-season my YETI™ Cast Iron Skillet? Heat your skillet on your burner over a low to medium heat. Next, use a cloth to coat the skillet with a thin layer of neutral cooking oil on all surfaces and turn the heat to high. Heat the skillet until it starts smoking and leave it over the heat until the pan stops smoking. Your skillet will be hot, so remember to use a mitt (we prefer silicone) when handling it.
  • Is the YETI™ Cast Iron Skillet safe? No, do not put it in the . It will rust… And rust isn’t good. To avoid it, hand wash and heat the skillet on the stove to evaporate any residual water. When not in use, store in a cool dry place. Do not leave outside.
  • What are the marks on my pan? Most cast iron pans feature these marks, but because our pans are cast with a ceramic mold to produce a hyper-smooth finish, they may be more noticeable. These marks are not considered damage and do not affect the performance of your pan, and over time will fill in with seasoning.

Field Use

Now, onto the glamping, , and campfire cooking portion of this review. My wife, Andrea, and I headed to northern to revisit a magnificent glamping site in  Shameless plug for them as it’s always an amazing stay, and they aren’t paying or giving me anything to say that. Check North Shore Co out, you’ll love ’em!

While my wife and I enjoyed our weekend getaway of hiking and being tourists on the North Shore of by eating out for lunch and dinner for several days, we did cook all of our breakfasts over a campfire and got a legit trial by fire for the YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14. I cooked 1/2 a package of bacon each morning – family style – and the 14″ skillet had no issues handling that much bacon.

I’d then let the bacon grease season and lube the pan for part two of our breakfast: lots of eggs! We’d eat half a dozen or more eggs each morning and all of that delicious bacon grease was just what the doctor ordered when you’re out .

Messy, yes. Delicious, double yes!

I could set the pan on a cooking rack above the flame, but more often than not I simply placed the pan directly on the fire resting on a log.  Regardless of how I treated the pan, it gave a very even distribution of heat while cooking.

Departing Thoughts

So, what are my final thoughts on the YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14?… Overall, it performed better than I expected. I had high hopes for this skillet, but it still delivered on all of its advertised promises: very generous working area, you can cook a lot of food at one time, the heat was even throughout the pan, it was pre-seasoned (good to go straight out-of-the-box), and it was easy to clean up. This skillet not only performed well on my wife and I’s camping trip, but we have to come use it almost daily in our kitchen at home to cook breakfast and other meals. We are sold on this skillet!

In closing, I want to say thank you to YETI for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14 is something worth spending your money on? Would you take one with you hunting? Bring one along while camping, hiking, or ranching? As always, let us know all of your thoughts about YETI and the YETI Cast Iron Skillet 14 in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
