AllOutdoor Review: Napier Outdoors Backroadz Truck Tent

I’ll admit it – there’s something oddly satisfying about turning your truck bed into a cozy sleeping quarters. When I got the chance to test out the Napier Outdoors Backroadz Truck Tent from RealTruck, I was mainly curious about one thing: could this really be as convenient as throwing a regular tent in the back of the truck? After four trips and some interesting lessons learned about tent condensation, I’ve got some thoughts to share about this popular truck solution.

First Impressions: Napier Outdoors Backroadz Truck Tent

Right out of the included storage bag, the Backroadz tent impressed me with its thoughtful organization. The color-coded poles and sleeves actually make sense (unlike some tents I’ve wrestled with), and the materials feel substantially more robust than I expected at this price point. The included instructions are clear and logical, though I’d suggest doing your first setup in daylight out in your driveway before potentially setting it up in the dark once you reach your destination in the dark.

The overall build quality exceeded my expectations, with solid stitching throughout and reinforced stress points where they matter. I particularly appreciated the heavy-duty straps and buckles that secure the tent to your truck – this isn’t some flimsy setup that’ll fly away in the first breeze. That said, I did notice the pole channels could use some reinforcing, as I managed to create a small tear during my fourth setup (totally my fault in my haste, but worth noting).

Testing Experience: Napier Outdoors Backroadz Truck Tent

Over the course of four camping trips, I really got to know the quirks and features of this tent. The first night taught me a valuable lesson about ventilation. Condensation can build up if you don’t manage airflow properly. I felt pretty soaked by the next morning. Once I figured out the optimal window and vent configuration, it wasn’t an issue on subsequent trips. This is probably something that applies to any sealed tent. Have warm clothes, a sleeping bag, a blanket, and a cracked window. The mesh is nice so no critters will make an appearance.

Setting up the tent consistently took about 10 minutes once I got the hang of it. The color-coded system really helps, though I’d recommend being gentle with the fiberglass poles as they feel a bit less robust than I’d like. The gear loft and interior pocket proved surprisingly useful, and the built-in lantern hook became my go-to spot for a small fan/light combo.

One of my favorite features is the dual-layer door and windows – you get a mesh layer for ventilation and a solid layer for privacy/weather protection. The bathtub-style floor is another standout, creating a proper seal against the truck bed that kept out drafts and moisture. I never needed a separate ground cloth or mattress pad, though I did use a truck bed air mattress for comfort.

After extensive testing, the Napier Backroadz has earned a permanent spot in my camping kit. While there are a few minor issues like the somewhat delicate pole channels, the overall package delivers excellent value for anyone looking to turn their truck into a capable camping platform. The combination of easy setup, proper weather protection, and thoughtful features like the gear storage options make it a compelling choice. Speaking purely from my testing experience with the unit provided by RealTruck, this tent delivers on its promises – and that’s exactly what you want in camping gear.
