The Maven Optics CM.1 – 8X32 Monocular was provided for this review by Maven and while I do get to keep this product indefinitely after the conclusion of this review, this will not change my opinion on any of Maven’s current or future offerings. I have been using the CM.1 – 8X32 Monocular for around 6 months now and while I wish I could say it helped me spot a beautiful buck while tracking through the woods on a crisp autumn morning but unfortunately it has simply accompanied me on several hikes spotting birds at this point in time.

Design and Build Quality: Maven Optics CM.1 – 8×32 Monocular
The Maven CM.1 monocular impressed me right out of the box with its sleek and compact design. Weighing in at just under 12 ounces and measuring approximately 5 inches in length, it’s evident that Maven has prioritized portability without compromising on durability with the CM.1 . The monocular is encased in a sturdy magnesium alloy body, which not only feels robust in hand but also provides a reassuring level of protection against the elements. The exterior is coated with a textured rubber that enhances grip and makes it easier to handle, even in wet or cold conditions making this a thoughtful addition for outdoor use.
Optical Performance: Maven Optics CM.1 – 8×32 Monocular
The CM.1 features an 8X magnification with a 32mm objective lens diameter, striking a balance between magnification power and field of view. During field tests, I found the optical clarity to be pretty good, with crisp and sharp images across various lighting conditions. The fully multi-coated lenses contribute significantly to light transmission, resulting in bright and vivid images even in low-light situations at dawn or dusk. The monocular’s close focus capability of around 6 feet allows for detailed observation of nearby subjects, such as intricate bird plumage or small wildlife like squirrels. The field of view is wide enough to track moving subjects effectively while still providing enough magnification to identify distant objects with clarity. With that being said I do wish the field of view was a bit wider in some situations.
Features and Ergonomics: Maven Optics CM.1 – 8×32 Monocular
Maven has integrated several features into the CM.1 monocular that enhance usability and convenience in the field. The focus wheel is located where you would expect it to be but the operation could be a bit smoother. Its location also makes it tricky to adjust without moving the eyecup though in my opinion. That being said, the eyecup is there to accommodate users who wear glasses. One standout feature of the CM.1 is its waterproof and fog proof construction, achieved through O-ring seals and nitrogen purging. This ensures reliable performance in adverse weather conditions, whether encountering rain showers or sudden temperature changes. The monocular’s build is definitely what I would call its best feature and allows me not to be worried if I’m walking through the woods and there is some heavy rain in the forecast.
Field Performance: Maven Optics CM.1 – 8×32 Monocular
In practical field use, the Maven CM.1 delivers consistent performance across a range of scenarios. Whether scanning distant ridgelines or observing intricate details in flora and trees, the monocular excels in providing clear and detailed images. The lightweight design makes it easy to carry on hikes or pack into a daypack without adding significant bulk—a factor I really appreciate as I’m often carrying around a lot of additional camera gear.
Wrap Up: Maven Optics CM.1 – 8×32 Monocular
Overall, the Maven Optics CM.1 – 8X32 Monocular stands out as a versatile and reliable optical tool that comes in at a price that everyone should be able to afford. The optical clarity is much better than I expected considering this is a sub $200 product. I was also pretty impressed with the construction of the CM.1 and I felt like if I dropped it onto some rocks or into a puddle of mud, it would not really effect its overall integrity too much. The CM.1 excels in various outdoor applications, from birdwatching and wildlife observation to hiking and I’m sure it would be great for hunting as well. If you’re in the market for a compact and capable monocular that delivers on both optical clarity and rugged durability, the Maven CM.1 deserves serious consideration. It strikes a fine balance between functionality and portability while being pretty nice on the wallet.
