Field Use – Canyon Coolers Pro 85 Quart Cooler in Sandstone
So, how did this cooler perform for me out in the field?… I received this cooler last fall around the tail-end of November – and being as I live in Minnesota – my entire world felt like a cooler outside because winter hits us hard in the frigid North. So, my first true uses with this cooler came this spring while turkey hunting.
I was able to successfully harvest a bird during Minnesota’s spring turkey season on a day when it started out around 45 degrees and it quickly warmed up to 75 plus. With my bird on the ground and an hour plus before I could get it home and fully-process it, I needed somewhere to store an entire bird – tail, spurs, feathers, and all – and the Pro 85 Quart Cooler afforded me ample space to do so.
The next test I put this cooler through was a weekend of camping with my wife on the north shore of Lake Superior. We brought all of the kitchen utensils that we would need, snacks, and some colder items like eggs, milk, cheese, etc. I stored everything inside the cooler (utensils and all) because then I needed one less tote or bag to bring along on the trip.
Again, I was grateful for how spacious this cooler was that it could house a weekend’s worth of food and other accoutrements that we were going to need on our trip. While we ate out for lunch and supper enjoying ourselves and being tourists while hiking, we did make coffee and cook breakfast every morning over a campfire. For those calm, quiet mornings this cooler was clutch.
With an aerial basket, we could keep certain items out of the bottom of the cooler away from the melted ice and moisture.
Additionally, I found it very easy to drain off any water that might accrue from melted ice. The plug unscrewed easily and went back in without a hitch.
The side handles were rugged, flexible, and you can even remove them entirely if you feel so inclined. I liked the hard plastic/rubber handles because it gave you ample dexterity while still not cutting into the palm of your hand.
The only small piece of constructive criticism that I have for the Pro 85 Quart Cooler is that I wasn’t a fan of the front cooler latches. They were a bit cumbersome to lock into place one-handed. I would find myself using both hands to pop them loose and then to again lock them down. Their security is great, but I thought they could have been made it be a bit easier to unlock and and lock again.
Final Thoughts – Canyon Coolers Pro 85 Quart Cooler in Sandstone
So, what are my final thoughts on the Canyon Coolers Pro 85 Quart Cooler in a Sandstone colorway?… Overall, for the price point, the balance of quality, and blend of affordability, this is a very nice cooler. You shouldn’t need to spend $1,000 to get yourself a “bulletproof” cooler, and with a Canyon Cooler, you have affordability and durability. If anyone is looking for another cooler to add to their arsenal for summertime fun, I would absolutely recommend them.
