Alkaline batteries are great, but when the grid goes down it means you have a limited amount of power stored. This is why rechargeable batteries are so popular in the preparedness community.
If you have a way to recharge these batteries when the grid goes down it means less storage, less cost, and renewable energy until the electricity comes back on.
In this video I show one method I use to recharge my batteries using small solar panels and a battery bank. Then I connect the battery pack to the XTar battery charger.
