If I had to choose, I would gladly take this over a premium cut of beef any day of the week. After a long day of canoe camping in the Boundary Waters, @mnpovangler brought out some incredible venison steaks to throw over the open fire grate.
We were just settling in, pouring a little bourbon and enjoying a phenomenal Minnesota outdoors sunset, when the shoreline absolutely erupted. We had to pause the campfire cooking to run down to the water and reel in a beautiful walleye hitting on the night bite! You can’t ask for a better backcountry catch and cook interruption.
After securing the fish, we pulled the venison off the fire. I hadn’t had venison in years, mostly because I always expected a gamey flavor, but this was insanely juicy, tender, and tasted incredible. Truly the ultimate BWCA surf and turf right at camp.
