How To Make Biscuits While Camping
You can use canned refrigerated biscuits and bake them or fry them like we did with our campfire Dutch oven donuts.
Alternatively, you can make this Dutch oven biscuit recipe that requires only 6 simple ingredients.
Step 1. Pre-measure and mix dry ingredients at home (optional)
One way I make Dutch oven baked goods at the campsite easily is by carrying only the ingredients I need … I pre-measure and mix my dry ingredients at home.
If you want to do this, you will be measuring the sugar, salt and Bisquick mix and transporting the mixture in a food storage container.

Step 2. Prepare your Dutch oven for baking
These camping biscuits are baked in a standard depth 12-inch
cast iron Dutch oven.
You can spray the bottom and sides with cooking spray or use a parchment paper liner.

If you want to make these biscuits as one of our campfire recipes you’ll be using about 25 campfire coals or charcoal briquettes.
Alternatively, making them as one of our camp stove recipes will require you to use a Dutch oven dome and your propane stove.

Whichever cooking method you choose, you’ll need to pre-heat
the oven to 350 degrees.
If you are making a bigger batch and using a larger Dutch oven, check out our Dutch oven temperature chart to determine the number of coals you will need.
Step 3. Mix and knead the dough
It is time to combine the dough butter, sugar, egg, club soda, salt and Bisquick in a bowl and
then knead it with your hands until it is a smooth texture.
Using a baking mix, like Bisquick, eliminates the need to add baking powder and soda to your easy camping meals.
Step 4. Make the biscuits
You will be flattening the dough on wax paper and then
cutting out about 9 biscuits in a round shape.
No fancy equipment is required, you can use a biscuit cutter if you want but a drinking glass or just a knife will also do the trick.
Step 5. Bake the dough
The oven is already pre-heated so be careful as you place
the biscuits on the bottom of the hot Dutch oven.
They only take about 12-15 minutes to reach a nice golden
brown color.
Camp Cooking Tip:
Turn the lid and oven about 1/4 turn in opposite directions every few minutes
to achieve evenly baked biscuits.
If you want to prepare this as one of our make ahead camping meals, you can enjoy a biscuit while hiking on a trail or as road trip food ideas while traveling in your vehicle.
Step 6. Top and serve
Trickle melted butter over the top of the biscuits and serve
warm.
These camping biscuits are yummy as a compliment to campfire Dutch oven chili as well as campfire stew.
They are also delicious camping snacks with a bit of jam or served as traditional camping breakfast ideas of hearty comfort food like biscuits and gravy.
