Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have something my old soul has not heard of. Cupfire! That is right, it is not rimfire or pinfire or even teatfire (yep that’s a thing). We have a pair of Cupfire revolvers courtesy of Cody Firearms Museum (check them out)! A Cupfire cartridge looks like a cylinder and at one end the bullet is sunk inside the case, kind of like a 7.62x38R Nagant cartridge. The cup portion of a Cupfire cartridge is the opposite end which instead of being flat is concave and the firing pin is supposed to strike the inner lip.
“A pair of Merwin & Bray cupfire revolvers. The revolvers are loaded through the front of the cylinder, the visible rod is the ejector which turns up and then slides forward to eject spent cases. Cupfire is similar to rimfire, there is priming compound in the cartridge base, and the hammer strikes the inner lip of an inverted cup in the base of the cartridge. It’s strange, but kind of cool, but mostly strange.”
