Ohio’s Wild Turkey Hunting Season

Hunters in Ohio go wild for the Spring Turkey season (almost as much as football season in the fall). Recently, the ODNR shared updated figures for the season. As of May 25 this year, Ohio hunters have reported checking 15,911 birds. For context, Ohio’s seasons are divided into two zones: the South and the Northeast. (The Northeast zone includes Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Trumbull Counties.) For the South Zone, the dates run from April 19 to May 18, whereas in the Northeast, the season began on May 3 and continues through June 1. The youth season for the state was held on April 12 & 13. Ohio hunters are permitted to harvest one bearded turkey for the Spring season.

Additionally, during the Spring Turkey Season of 2024, Ohio hunters recorded 15,535 checked birds within a comparable timeframe. The three-year average from 2022 to 2024 for the same period was 14,361 checked birds. This year’s total comprises the 1,740 turkeys harvested during the two-day youth season on April 12-13, along with all birds checked over 30 days of hunting in the South zone and those obtained during the 23 days of hunting in the Northeast zone.

So far, the counties with the highest total of checked turkeys are Ashtabula (466), Monroe (462), Belmont (459), Guernsey (419), Muskingum (406), Tuscarawas (401), Carroll (396), Trumbull (378), Meigs (376), Columbiana (372), and Coshocton (372). While the season has ended for the 83 counties in the South Zone, the five counties in the Northeast Zone have until June 1. The Ohio Division of Wildlife has issued 52,615 spring turkey permits (as of May 25, 2025).

These numbers reflect the growing popularity of the Spring Turkey Season in the Buckeye State. While Ohio boasts a vibrant hunting population, the state is limited in the types of game it offers, primarily focusing on deer, waterfowl, turkey, and small game.
