AO Review: Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer

Silencers are becoming much more commonplace in gun shops as well as out in the field. While there still are significant paperwork barriers to purchasing, shops and online retailers are more agile than ever in assisting people with the process. So, if we’re looking to hunt suppressed, what are we looking for? Obviously, noise suppression, but also something lightweight that isn’t comically long. It is easy to make a long, heavy suppressor that works well. The conundrum is a light and short one that dulls the noise of our rifles. Savage Arms believes that they have solved this dilemma with a rather clever spin on the standard blueprint of a silencer. They have a back-over-barrel silencer that retains a large internal volume for suppression, is lightweight, and only adds a small amount of length to the overall length of your rifle. Can all of these things actually be true? So, in this AllOutdoor Review, we are going to take a look at the Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer to see how it performs in the field. Let’s dive in!

A Word from Savage Arms on the New AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer

Westfield, Massachusetts – Savage Arms®, an iconic firearm manufacturer, is debuting a new addition to its popular line of AccuCan suppressors. The AC30 B.O.B. (Back Over Barrel) suppressor is the perfect option for shooters looking to enhance balance and reduce overall firearm length while shooting suppressed.

The B.O.B. design partially encloses the barrel, allowing for more internal volume and minimizing the increase of overall rifle length. These modifications improve sound suppression and reduce point-of-impact shift, leading to better accuracy.

“The AC30 B.O.B. is a great addition to our suppressor line that gives hunters and shooters performance advantages and options,” said Beth Shimanski, Director of Marketing at Savage Arms. “This design and option is attractive to a wide variety of hunters as it provides a significant reduction in noise, is more compact, rated for all .30 caliber options and also reduces felt recoil. Competitive shooters will enjoy similar benefits of reduced noise and recoil, without sacrificing maneuverability.”

What’s the Upsell? What’s the 30-Second Elevator Pitch?

So, with a silencer market that has a ton of options in the way of .30 cal suppressors, what’s the upsell to the Savage Arms AC30 B.O.B.? Why would you want to dive in on this one as opposed to other suppressors within the Savage Arms lineup? It really boils down to one simple thing: you’re getting equivalent suppression in a smaller form factor on your rifle. Less banging into brush while out in the field and more quiet shots.

What’s in the Box?

One of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms and their related products is, “what’s in the box?” Meaning, what do you all get with your purchase. This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or hunting setup to look like. All this being said, this is everything that you will receive:

Included in the Box:

  • Cardboard, Padded Box

Field Use – Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer

So, how did this silencer perform out on the range?… I mounted this silencer to my tried-and-true Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor for testing. Being that this model of silencer can simply Direct Thread, I simply needed to pop off the muzzle brake that comes with my rifle and hand spin on my silencer. Easy-peasy.

Next, it was time to send some rounds down range to see how the silencer might affect accuracy and sound. For the testing of this silencer, I used some new Nosler Whitetail Country Ammunition. So, a tremendous thank you is in order to Nosler for supporting this review with some of their quality ammunition. In testing, I was firing fresh Nosler Whitetail Country ammo and I was able to achieve groups around 3/4″, which is common for my Waypoint.

As far as noise suppression, this silencer did a great good job of eliminating that “first round pop” – the sometimes louder first shot we take because the silencer is being filled up with gases and being put to work for the first time. From the first shot fired to the last, the report or sound to your ear was the same; it was similarly suppressed every time.

Additionally, I the Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer does a phenomenal job of flash suppression as well. I have tested a lot of silencers over the years and they can range from being straight flamethrowers to something reminiscent of a 4th of July sparkler. This suppressor displayed nothing like that. So, you aren’t temporarily blinded or stunned by a flamethrower exhaling out of your silencer, and you can watch your impact on target.

I also found that the faint knurling on the exterior of the can was more than enough to have ample grip to spin the silencer apart for servicing out in the field (if you should need to do so.

The barrel on my Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint is decently large in diameter relative to traditional bolt-actions with its carbon-fiber sleeved barrel yet it had no issue accepting the back over barrel silencer from Savage Arms.

Departing Shots

So, what are my final thoughts on the Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer?… The thought of a silencer extending rearward onto your rifle for space savings is an odd move, but goll dang it, it works! It not only looks aesthetically pleasing sitting on your rifle, but it suppresses as well – if not better – than traditional silencer profiles, it mitigates your flash, and tames down the recoil for whatever cartridge you might be shooting. If you are a hunter, like many of us are here at AllOutdoor, you should give the Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer a good discerning look.

In closing, I want to say thank you to Savage Arms for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their new Savage Arms AC30 BOB (Back Over Barrel) AccuCan Silencer. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think?
