Savage 110 PPR (Pro Pursuit Rifle) Takes on the Dark Continent
Last month I embarked on the long trip across the pond to one of my favorite places, the Limpopo Valley in the Northen part of South Africa. We spend a lot of our time very close to the intersection of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana along the Limpopo River which keeps everything lush and green for extended periods of time and allows the game the thrive in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
This year I once again had a full slate of plains game I would be chasing but also just taking in the scenery and ad never looking a gift horse in the mouth for whatever Africa turns up. You can have a list to start but that quickly goes out the window and you learn that you never pass an opportunity. This year I was toting the all-new Savage 110 PPR which is the newest work horse in their rifle lineup. I say work horse, but this thing is jam packed full of feature and functionality that would also classify it as a viable show pony. Ok, enough with the horse references…
Famous chef, hunter and just all-around good dude, Mike Robinson, helped Savage design a rifle that he felt would stand up to the rigors of his day-to-day life. This entails culling various deer species from estates around the UK and subsequently supplying meat for his company, Deer Box. This guy is culling HUNDREDS of deer every year so who better to lean into for feedback on just what he needs in a rifle, the primary tool of his trade.
For me, I am shooting FAR less deer per year but who doesn’t like a good work horse of a rifle. I was excited to get the PPR out in the Bushveld chasing plains game on my latest safari. Here is my rundown on the rifle itself and why it was the perfect tool to tackle the dark continent.
Here are the formal tech specs from Savage:
- Lightweight Grayboe Phoenix 2 stock painted with earth-tone camo and black web
- 20” Proof Research Carbon Fiber wrapped Stainless Steel barrel
- User-adjustable AccuTrigger
- M-Lok bottom rail on forend

The Savage 110 PPR comes in 10 different calibers, so you are sure to find something that makes the most sense for your normal pursuits. Everything from 270 Win on up to some of the not so new anymore PRCs and magnum calibers like my tried-and-true favorite, the 300 Win Mag. They even have the new 7mm BC available!
What Like most about the Savage 110 PPR is the functionality. You can quickly adjust the cheek riser on the fly to accommodate multiple shooters, ensuring a proper fit and cheek weld. Plus, all the QD cups and M-Lock mounts on the front end. Makes for a perfect platform to add any and all accessories you may need on your ever day hunts.
Keep doing what you’re doing Savage! Just when I think you guys are about to take your foot off the gas you come out with something new and groundbreaking! For now, I am in a bit of a lull until my next hunt later this year and I have no doubts that between now and then Savage will be bringing something new and exciting to the table, can’t wait.
