Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Introduced in 1972, the Manurhin MR 73 emerged as France’s response to post-WWII criminal threats armed with military weapons. This premium .357 Magnum revolver featured unique innovations including an adjustable trigger mechanism with a separate spring system, cold-hammer-forged barrels, and exceptionally strong cylinders proof-tested to twice normal pressures. Each MR 73 required over 12 hours of hand-fitting, resulting in match-grade accuracy guaranteed under 20mm at 25 meters. The frames, cylinders, and barrels used high-strength ordnance steel, while chambers received special hardening. Early models offered an innovative 9mm Parabellum cylinder conversion using the Pilorget extraction system, though this option was later restricted under French law. Adopted by elite units like GIGN and RAID, the MR 73 came in various barrel lengths from 2.5″ to 10″. Though 50% more expensive than American competitors, its quality and durability made it a standard for French law enforcement until 1998, when production moved to Chapuis Armes. In 2021, Beretta began importing select models to the U.S. with current prices starting at $4,179.
