Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! The Colt M1892 marked a significant milestone as the U.S. military’s first standard-issue double-action revolver with a swing-out cylinder. The design introduced modern features including a thumb-operated cylinder catch and star extractor for quick reloading, though its counter-clockwise cylinder rotation would prove problematic over time. Initially chambered in .38 Long Colt, the revolver underwent several improvements resulting in the Models 1894, 1896, 1901, 1903, and variants for different service branches. However, combat experience in the Philippines revealed the .38 caliber’s inadequate stopping power, leading troops to demand older .45 caliber revolvers. One famous M1892 belonged to Theodore Roosevelt, who carried it during the charge up San Juan Hill. Though the revolver served through WWI in rear-echelon roles, its limitations ultimately led to its replacement by the .45 caliber Colt New Service in 1909. Despite its shortcomings, the M1892’s innovative features helped establish the template for modern service revolvers.
