This gorgeous ocean-side campground is located just over 25 miles north of . The property is nestled along a headland, which looks out over the Pacific Ocean. From this vantage point, you can spot whales, sea birds, and seals as they swim or fly by the shore. 

Nearby, there’s a Native American village and numerous tidepools to explore. Plus, it’s just a short walk down to , where you can search for rare gemstones and shells.

2. Burlington Campground

This campground is situated alongside some of California’s most famous residents: colossal redwood trees. Located less than 50 miles southeast of Eureka, on the aptly-named Avenue of the Giants, this campground is open year round and is within walking distance of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center. 

The Burlington Campground is absolutely ideal for hiking, dirt biking, and wildlife-watching, with dozens of nearby nature trails and tracks to explore.

3. Gold Bluffs Beach Campground

This campground is just over an hour’s drive north of Eureka, in the iconic Redwood National Park. This campground gives you full access to a remote beach stretch that lies along the Pacific Ocean, making it more than worth the journey. 

Gold Bluffs Beach Campground has a total of 26 tent/RV sites. Here you’ll find firepits, solar-powered showers, and barbeques available at each of the campsites. And did we mention, miles upon miles of high-quality hiking trails.Super cool and unique campground you won’t find many other places. Nearby Fern Canyon was amazing.” Scott B.

4. Elk Country RV Resort and Campground

This vast campground is less than 40 minutes north of Eureka by car, just off of the Redwood Highway. A number of local Elk regularly graze and mull around this rolling, coastal landscape. There’s something especially relaxing about watching them as they move lazily through the wildflower meadows and past quaint country barns.

For the sand seekers, there is a splendid and not-too-busy beach just one mile from Elk Country RV Resort & Campground. And to continue the theme of the area, there is a large variety of hiking and biking trails to explore nearby.

5. Van Duzen County Park

Van Duzen County Park Campground, also known as Swimmer’s Delight Campground, is situated just over 30 miles southeast of Eureka. This property lies on the banks of the Van Duzen River, attracting anglers, watersports enthusiasts, and swimmers alike.

The campsites at Van Duzen County Park Campground are well-shaded and each comes equipped with a grill and a picnic table for meals. Nearby, there’s a small annex called Pamplin Grove Campground that is open throughout the summer and into October. Amazing place right on the Van Duzen River. Full campground with RV sites, tent sites, and vault toilets.” C.H.

6. Giant Redwoods RV and Camp

This privately-owned RV campground is located just over 50 miles southeast of Eureka. But it’s a straightforward route that should take less than an hour to get to, by car or van.

The campground itself is easily accessible, lying just off of the Avenue of the Giants. Once you arrive here, you’ll be right in the middle of the awe-inspiring redwood forest. You’ll love taking time to walk along the oceanfront or stroll underneath these mighty coniferous trees. 

The Giant Redwoods RV campground offers 11 full hook-up sites and has several big-rig sites for larger RVs. And as an added treat, the fiber-optic Wi-Fi at the campground is excellent.

Our site backed up to the Eel River with giant redwoods everywhere.  The grounds were super clean and quiet. Just hung out at the beach the whole time, but the Avenue of the Giants is right there. Must see if you haven’t been.” Randy J.

7. Big Lagoon County Park Campground

This beachside campground is seven miles north of Trinidad, which makes it about a 30-minute drive north of Eureka. Kids and adults alike love that it offers ramp access to the lagoon. You can go paddleboarding and kayaking across this large expanse of water.

The sites are well spaced out, allowing you to enjoy the freshwater breeze in private. Additionally, there are coin-operated showers and well-maintained restrooms for guests to use. 

Guests will awaken to the sounds of crashing waves in the distance and maybe the chirping of osprey or squawking if a great blue heron is nearby.” Annalisa R.
