Campfire Cooking: Pizza!

Join Skowhegan Outdoors’ Outdoor Recreation Facilitator Sage along with program participants as they make pizza on a campfire!

Ingredients for a single 8 inch pizza:
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon yeast
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
pizza sauce and toppings

Supplies:
thick leather fire gloves
lots of firewood
dutch oven
cornmeal
pot for water
plastic bags

Directions:
1. Start your fire
2. wash your hands
3. mix dry ingredients together in a plastic bag
4. heat water in a pot next to the fire
5. when the water is lukewarm, add it to the dry ingredients
6. push the air out of the bag and close it
7. knead the dough continuously for about 10 minutes
8. let the dough rise for an hour, or until it has doubled in size
9. prepare your pizza toppings and dust the dutch oven with cornmeal
10. once the dough is done rising, remove it from the plastic bag and stretch or roll it until it is about the size of your dutch oven
11. scoop the coals of your fire to one side of the fire pit and place the dutch oven on top
12. place the lid on the dutch oven and light a small fire on top for an even bake
13. check on your pizza every 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and it looks golden brown
14. if it is not ready after the first 5 minutes, rotate the dutch oven 180 degrees and check on it again after another 5 minutes
