Split Rock Creek moves through this stunning campsite. You can spend hours exploring the dramatic, steep quartzite formations that run along each side of this stream. The creek itself is an ideal spot for some refreshing wild swimming, while eager photographers love the craggy shadows and golden light of the surrounding area. Palisades State Park is just over 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls.

3. Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

This campground is on the northern bank of the 512-acre human-made Lake Vermillion, around 25 miles west of Sioux Falls. The Vermillion River, which flows into this lake, contains natural crimson quartzites that lend it an otherworldly quality. The lake provides ample opportunity for both fly-fishing and watersports. There is a kid’s playground in the West Campground.

This campground is in Blue Mounds State Park, a 40-minute drive northeast of Sioux Falls. The park has many fantastic walking trails and a small, human-made waterfall to explore. The striking rock formations provide great views of the surrounding plains, upon which herds of bison graze.

5. Newton Hills

South Dakota

Just over 35 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, this campground is nestled alongside the Coteau des Prairies, a theatrical relic of the time when glaciers spread across North America. The area around here is all rounded hills and ancient forests, and in certain places, the 100-mile broad plateau reaches elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.

There are bicycle rentals and cabins available for rent at the campground alongside the RV and tent sites.

This small campground rests along the Split Rock River, just over 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls. The lots are roomy and tidy, while the nearby river is perfect for wild swimming and watersports. The nearby creek is lined with steep, quartzite formations and is ideal for exploring with friends and family. This campsite’s rates are affordable, and you’ll be camping close to Devil’s Gulch, with its towering, maroon rock faces.
