This campground is on the northern bank of the 512-acre human-made Lake Vermillion, around 25 miles west of Sioux Falls. The Vermillion River, which flows into this lake, contains natural crimson quartzites that lend it an otherworldly quality. The lake provides ample opportunity for both fly-fishing and watersports. There is a kid’s playground in the West Campground.

This campground is in Blue Mounds State Park, a 40-minute drive northeast of Sioux Falls. The park has many fantastic walking trails and a small, human-made waterfall to explore. The striking rock formations provide great views of the surrounding plains, upon which herds of bison graze.

5. Newton Hills
Just over 35 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, this campground is nestled alongside the Coteau des Prairies, a theatrical relic of the time when glaciers spread across North America. The area around here is all rounded hills and ancient forests, and in certain places, the 100-mile broad plateau reaches elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.
