It’s a first-come, first-serve campsite near the town of Fritch with stunning sunset views over the lake. There are some developed sites, but mostly it is sparse desert camping. There is no potable water available and only vault toilets, so plan accordingly.

2. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

At 20 miles long, 2 miles wide, and 800 feet deep, Palo Duro Canyon is as impressive as the Grand Canyon. Choose from a wide range of sites at the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, like equestrian sites, electric, or rural. There are also cabins or pavilions to rent out. There’s a store, and the access to the sites are paved.

This is an excellent destination for families as it includes mini-golf, playgrounds, and a pool. Choose between a range of options like full hook-ups or more rustic camping.

Located next to the Amarillo Airport is an incredibly convenient and well-tended KOA right off the famous Route 66. There are all the necessary amenities at the Amarillo KOA and then some, with hay wagon rides, a dog park, a pool, and activities such as corn hole and ladder ball. Great for an extended stay, as a jumping-off point, or as the prime destination.

5. Sanford-Yake Campground

About 44 miles from Amarillo, Texas, in the Lake Meredith Recreation Area, is the Sanford-Yake Campground, a stunning campsite. You can boondock or camp rustically for free or pay for a concrete, pull-thru pad with electric hookup.
There are about 10 sites with electric and water hookups, but dry-camping is just as fun, and you don’t have to pay. Restrooms are available 24 hours, and there are warm showers.
